n a preceding article I told the peculiarmanner in which the state of Rusinia wasformed and an alliance with Czecho-slovakia effected, not through the effortsand desires of the Rusins in Rusinia, butthrough the representations which Rusinsin America made to the peace conference.Having made their homeland free, a largepercentage of the Rusins in America areanxious to go back to Rusinia to live. Sincemany of them live in the meanest and mostfrugal way in America, devoting themselvesexclusively to saving money, it is not at allunusual for a Rusin to come back with5000 American dollars in his pockets. When I was in Czechoslovakia $5000meant 400,000 Czechoslovak crowns; andin prewar times that amount of moneywould have meant that its possessor couldbe a land baron. Most of the immigrantsseem to figure in prewar prices, and italways proves to be a crushing mistake.To-day, however, 400,000 crowns doesntgo very far in Rusinia.
