Text Appearing Before Image:
forhim. He was so far from understanding what had hap-pened. He only saw what he saw. As for me—lying flat, with him standing so tall above me—I seemed still tolook down upon him from an immeasurable height. Thereis no conceit like the first consciousness of motherhood;no peace so religious. Eve, Eve! whispered Adam in a shocked voice, as hefell upon his knees and lifted my hand to his lips. For-give me, forgive me! This God! I did not know what it was to be. There was nothing to forgive. I had the baby. It wasas if Id paid a small sum and had cheated the universeout of a young planet. The sense of gain was as great. You may look at her, I commented. Yes, to be sure! he exclaimed, rising to his feet witha look of dread upon his features. Where is it? heasked, moistening his lips with his tongue. She, I insisted feebly. Of course, he assented. Mother told me it is a girl. She, I persisted, wagging my head upon the pillow toindicate the precious bundle on the opposite side of the bed.
Text Appearing After Image:
/ Was Living in the Children and for Them He had been casting his eyes about the room as if heexpected to behold the baby on the mantelpiece or leaningout of a vase like a flower. Now his whole being seemedto undergo a change. He rose on his tiptoes, bent hisback and began to sneak around the foot of the bed.Every angle of his body expressed dread, repulsion andfear. If any man were allowed to follow his own feel-ings in this delicate matter he would never look at his ownchild until it had faded into a Caucasian shade and hadsense enough to return his gaze. I do believe men havea natural distaste for very young infants. They seemto embarrass male parenthood. I am sure it was onlyto please me that Adam now consented to look at her. I cant see it, he murmured, peering down at thecovers. Adam! I exclaimed, with as much indignation as Ihad the strength to muster. Our child has a properhuman gender. She is not a neuter it. She is a girl! I never saw a man in my life that would concede sex
