Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Sarcophagus of Siwan This is the stone coffin of Joan, the daughter of an English king, (John), and the wife of a Welsh prince, (Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales). Joan, in Welsh, Siwan, died in 1237 and was buried at the Friarage at nearby Llanfaes. At the dissolution of the monasteries, Llanfaes Friary was destroyed and anything of value robbed. The coffin, minus Joan, was found in the 1800s on a farm by Viscount Bulkeley. As the farmer was intending to use it as a pig trough, Bulkeley had it conveyed to the safety of the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas at Beaumaris. The flag is that of the Royal House of Gwynedd.
