Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Royal Oak - geograph.org.uk - 1594887.jpg |
English: The Royal Oak. The people of Biddulph were afraid that this pub was going to be knocked down to make way for a new Sainsbury's development, but thankfully it has been saved. The building to left is the former Somerfield store is going (see 1408892), if we look closely we can see just how close together they are, so we hope the pub remains undamaged during the demolition.
Reputedly this pub was the first "port-of-call" for miners alighting from the workers train here 1342716 after their shifts had ended. The landlord would have pints of beer lined up on the bar ready for the thirsty men so that they would not have to wait, and allegedly the noise made by the clogs of the running men would make the ground shake! |
