[edit]DescriptionThe Rocket Cart House and the Haven - geograph.org.uk - 1340957.jpg |
English: The Rocket Cart House and the Haven Even on an overcast day it is possible to see why this late C19 watchtower was built here where a slight elevation in the flat landscape allows enormous visibility over the shipping lanes in Milford Haven. The look-out was erected in conjunction with the adjacent store for rockets and ammunition designed to propel life-saving apparatus to ships in distress. This was the invention of a Cornishman, Henry Trengrouse of Helston (1772-1854), who, in 1807, witnessed the sinking of HMS Anson with the loss of over 100 sailors. Although it happened close to shore no ropes could be attached owing to the rough sea. After watching a firework display to celebrate George III's birthday, Trengrouse, a cabinet-maker, came up with the idea of using rockets to fire a line from ship to shore or vice versa, allowing a bosun's chair to be used to convey sailors to safety. (He also invented the life-jacket.)
Rockets were transported to the disaster scene in a cart stored here and the system was in use until the 1930s. Henry Trengrouse's invention was more or less ignored at the time but is now recognized as having saved thousands of lives.
