[edit]DescriptionThe Promised Land, September 1925.png |
English: The Promised Land, an illustration accompanying Genet Bingham Dee's "The Promised Land", Stories We All Love, The Children's Friend 24, no. 9 (September 1925): 352–354, here 352. Depicts a Book of Mormon scene in which Lehi and his family arrive in "the promised land", which Dee (and perhaps H. W. as well) interpret as being the Americas. In the center of the image is Lehi, depicted with a long beard, a turban-like head covering, and long flowing robes all over his body down to his ankles. He wears sandals. With his left hand he gestures/points, gesturing toward something he sees beyond the borders of the artwork. His right hand is held slightly aloft, at about the level of his waist. He stands on a rounded surface, perhaps the crest of a hill. To the left of Lehi is a body whose head comes up to about Lehi's shoulder; he has a cap or head covering over hair that is very curly and goes down to about just below his ears. He wears a coat or shrug over a tunic that goes about to his knees, with a belt over the tunic, a walking stick in his right hand, and sandals on his feet. This boy is recognizable as Nephi, based on H. W.'s other artworks in the 1925 run of The Children's Friend. A train of people trail behind Lehi and Nephi, several carrying baggage over their shoulders. A child is visible among the train, as are some unbearded figures who are possible women. Huge clouds loom behind Nephi and Lehi in the sky (otherwise, the generalized shapes of trees or mountains). At the edges of the image, tropical vegetation is visible: palm fronds and ferns. In the bottom right corner of the image is the text "THE PROMISED LAND" and a signature initial: "HW". |
