Brisbane is the starting point for all the trains to the FarSouth-Western districts, North Coast and Central districts, andthe Southern districts on the New South Wales border at Wallan-garra and Tweed Heads. When the Great Western and GreatNorth Coast railway schemes are consummated, through com-munication will be opened up with Camooweal in the FarNorth-West and Cairns in the Far North. Fifty years ago the population only numbered about 1,000;at the end of December, 1914, it was 154,011, within a 10-mile 8 THE POCKET BRISBANE radius. The population of the whole State of Queensland is676,707. The salubrity of the climate is emphasised by the lownessof the death-rate, and satisfactory condition of the birth-rate.The former in 1914 was only 12.67 per 1,000 inhabitants, andthe latter 34.37 per 1,000. The mean summer temperature is76.7, and the mean winter temperature 59.4.

All the otherreligious denominations have fine churches, the Baptist Taber-nacle, Wickham terrace; St. Andrews Presbyterian Church,Creek and Ann streets; and St. Pauls Presbyterian Church,Leichhardt street, being particularly prominent.
