English: The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company's Screw Steam Ship "Madras". A starboard-broadside view of the screw steamship 'Madras.' She was part of the Peninsular and Oriental (P&O) Steam Navigation Company that carried mail, passengers, and cargo between the UK, Spain and Portugal, Egypt, India, the Far East, and Australia. By the mid-nineteenth century, most of the new ships built for P&O were powered by screw propellers instead of paddle-wheels. |
