Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Caption reads: "The Panoramic Rotunda." Credit reads: "C. Burton D"

Text (Goodrich) reads: "…erected by subscription in 1818 on ground adjacent to the East end of the New-York Institution and the City Hall, with the entrance in Chambers-street…."

"The Rotunda, originally a circular, dome-like structure, 54 feet in diameter, sometimes called the roundhouse, was erected by subscription for an art gallery at the instance of John Vanderlyn, the artist, to whom the city granted the use of the ground free for a period of ten years upon condition that at the end of that period the building should become the property of the city." Source: Hall, Edward Hagaman. "A Brief History of City Hall Park, New York," Fifteenth Annual Report of the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society (Albany, 1910), pp. 397-8. (Byline on p. 383 erroneously reads "Edward Hagaman", but full name is given in the same document on p. 10.)

Building at center-right, in shadow, with two pediments and American flag, was the second almshouse in City Hall Park. (Hall, p. 395)
