Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Oxclose Road - geograph.org.uk - 525191.jpg |
English: The Oxclose Road A beautiful green track that leads west from Castle Bolton towards Askrigg, seen here at Ox Close. The route is certainly medieval, and may well be much older, as it passes close to prehistoric sites along the way. Users and builders of old tracks were not daft, as wherever possible they kept to the better drained limestone. The route saw a resurgence from the mid 18th century when a turnpike road was created nearer the valley bottom. Canny cattle drovers heading for market, brought their beasts this way to avoid 3 tollgates on the road below. The advent of the railway would eventually kill off cattle droving. |
