Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Ouseburn Culvert The arch (of which, only the top is visible) is the south end of the 700m reinforced-concrete culvert built in 1907-11 to take the water of the Ouse Burn. The steep-sided valley was then filled with industrial and household waste over a period of 40 years - the 'Ouseburn Tip', with a plan to provide level ground for housing. However, Government regulations no longer allowed houses to be built on landfill. In 1939, part of the culvert was converted into an air raid shelter for up to 3000 people with an entrance via steps that are now beneath the horse riding arena shown in the foreground. A plan in the 1960s for the 'City Stadium' to be built on the tip was also not completed. http://www.twsitelines.info/Siteline.nsf/SMR/487A569F9EC7C785802576AF003E6F2C?opendocument
