Summary

Description

Close to the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland, lies Calton Hill.

There are several historic buildings on the hill, including the Nelson Monument, seen here. It's the shape of an upturned telescope and commemorates Admiral Nelsons' victory over the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and his own death during that battle.

At the top of the tower is a time ball that is raised, and then lowered at exactly 1pm (when the time gun is fired from the castle). The purpose originally was to allow ships in the docks and the Firth of Forth (2+ miles (3 Km)) away to have a visible time marker to allow them to accurately set the time on the ship's chronometers - something that was very important in olden days.

The tradition of raising and lowering the ball has been continued even though its' original purpose is no longer needed. The ball is in the lowered position in my picture and can only be partly seen.

The monument dates from 1815 and stands prominently at the highest point of the hill and is 105 feet (32 metres) high.

In 2009 the monument was fully restored and today visitors can climb the 143 internal steps to the public viewing gallery which affords panoramic views including a view along the famous Princes Street.
