Moreover, they usemuch less current for the same amount of light. At the Jacobs mine preparations are actively pushed to com-mence a system of underground workings, on the principle of theGlory hole method, and hoisting by shaft. The shaft at the endof the year was down 515 feet, and a main level of 1400 feet had beendriven on the south west part of the pit. From this level a series ofcrosscuts branch out, and from these cross-cuts inclined raiseswere being driven to the surface. A large crushing and drying plant is being erected. Pendingthe completion of these alterations, work is carried on by theold methods of open pit and cable-derricks. It is expected thatthe new method will be put in operation in the spring of 1918. All the rockhas been set aside awaiting the completion of the mill which is beingbuilt. In the East Broughton field, the Quebec Asbestos Corporation,a company which took over the property of the Ling AsbestosCompany, after extensive alterations in the mill and in the mine,began producing in May, 1917. The cable derricks have been dis-carded and the rock is handled in the pit by steam-shovels and carswhich convey it to crushers put up in the pit bottom.
