Spinal Cord Pia Mater.—The pia covering the cord is everywhere swollen,thickened, and has a fibrinous exudate on its surface and into itsspaces. Its blood vessels are moderately congested and there areslight hemorrhages to be seen in a few,places. There is very littleevidence of cellular infiltration. Anterior Horn.—In the substance of the cord. ,the blood vesselsshow moderate infiltration of the Virchow-Robin spaces. This isas usual more marked in the branches of the anterior spinal vessels. Ganglionic Cells.—In the anterior horns the ganglionic cellshave largely disappeared. One or two are seen which appear com- PATHOLOGY OF POLIOMYELITIS 215 paratively normal. There is no localized cellular accumulation tobe seen anywhere. Throughout the anterior horns, there is pro-liferation of the neuroglia cells.
