Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Intercity years Norwich (36224626785).jpg | Completion of the electrification of the line between Norwich and Ipswich in 1987 allowed full electric operation of Norwich-London Liverpool St services from that year using Class 86 electric locos. Initially the traditional method of loco-hauled operation continued with the engine being uncoupled from its train upon arrival at London/Norwich and a fresh loco being coupled at the other end of the set for the next journey. However push-pull operation was introduced in the late 1980s (?) with Driving Brake Second Open carriages (DBSOs) being used. These vehicles contained a driving cab and time division multiplexing (TDM) equipment to allow a train to be driven remotely from the locomotive (attached to other end of the train). Here one such DBSO is seen rounding the curve adjacent to Crown Point Depot on its final approach to Norwich. The DBSO (which included standard class accommodation seating) was normally located at the Norwich end of the train, with the electric loco nearest London - an arrangement which continues today with the current Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) and Class 90 locos. |
