th the faithful fleas in his wool. The rock is esteemed sacred by every Mohammedan.It is surrounded by an iron stockade which none is al-lowed to enter. It is about forty feet long and sixtyfeet wide, and rises some six feet out of the floor. Itfills the whole inclosure and comes so close to the fencethat one can touch it, or, if he is devout, as are most ofthe worshippers we see in the mosque, he can put hismouth through the bars and impress a kiss upon it. As we walk about the fence examining the rock ourturbaned guide shows us its wonders. Here, says he,pointing to a round hole in one of the sides, is themark of Mohammeds heel. It was from that spot thatthe holy Prophet ascended to heaven, and as he rose therock started to go up with him holding fast to his heel.The Angel Gabriel had to put his hand upon it to keepit down, and here, pointing to five curious marks, arethe places where Gabriels fingers rested when he did so.
