The clinical work of the Hospital is exclusively surgical.The capacity is sixty-three patients. Last year 716 operationswere performed in the House; 6,943 visits were made to theOut-patient Department. The visiting surgeon to the Hos-pital is professor of gynecology in the Harvard MedicalSchool. Each fourth year student is required to attendtwelve successive clinics. Any student especially interestedmay elect more work. This course of instruction is givenin the Out-patient Department, where opportunity is offeredthe student to become proficient in this branch of medicine.Research work is carried on by members of the gynecologicaldepartment. They have made valuable contributions to theliterature. Fine ideals in service to patients and devotionto science have made the Free Hospital for Women pre-eminentlv successful. 57

INFANTS HOSPITAL INFANTS HOSPITAL THE Infants Hospital began in 1878 as a Day Nurseryat 18 Blossom Street. Dr. Henry Cecil Haven wasthe sponsor for this beginning. He and Dr. ThomasMorgan Rotch were pioneers in the study of infant disease.^and in scientific methods of artificial infant feeding. TheHospital was incorporated January 19, 1881, under the titleof the ^^est End Nursery and Hospital for Infants. A shorttime prior to this an Out-patient Department had been es-tablished. In 1903, the Hospital was removed to its present homeon A^an Dyke Street, near the Harvard Medical School. Thename was changed to the Infants Hospital; the building isknown as the Thomas Morgan Rotch, Jr., Memorial. TheOut-patient Department and Nursery were discontinued in1913.
