Description

The Grand Hall

The First Peoples Hall (also referred to as the Grand Hall) at the Canadian Museum of History (formerly the Museum of Civilization) in Gatineau, Quebec.

The First Peoples Hall highlights the cultural, historic and artistic achievements of Indigenous Peoples of Canada, interestingly, it also displays the world’s largest indoor collection of totem poles (1).

Designed by Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal, the Grand Hall has been meticulously conceived. The curving windows are 6 stories high and present an impressive view over the banks of the Ottawa River, which includes the National Gallery, the Chateau Laurier hotel, and Parliament Hill (2).

Inside the Grand Hall, every detail has been designed to work synergistically as a coherent whole. The ceiling represents a canoe (or a large First Peoples watercraft), the window columns represent the oars used to power the watercraft, finally, the floor tiles have been carefully laid to create the illusion of water ripples and waves as your eyes pass from one end of the hall to the other.

The hall can be rented for approximately $4500 (Cdn) per evening (2). As a result, it is a hugely popular venue for weddings and corporate events.
