Display Artist: Yoshida Hiroshi Display Title: The Golden Pavilion Series Title: Kansai District Creation Date: 1933 Height: 14 13/16 in. Width: 9 5/8 in. Display Dimensions: 14 13/16 in. x 9 5/8 in. (37.62 cm x 24.45 cm) Credit Line: Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Paige Label Copy: "In the early Tokaido series created before Hiroshiges popular works of the 1830s to 1850s, stations of the Tokaido were depicted not as landscape scenes, but with an emphasis on figures, stories, or products associated with each region. In this print Hokusai depicts an interior scene, probably of an inn, with two women seated by an alcove and a large shoji lantern. One of the women appears to be trying to light the floor lantern while the other adjusts the bow of a large obi. In the vertical cartouche in the upper right corner the artist signed the print gakyojin Hokusai ga, which means, by Hokusai, who was crazy about art."
