Summary

Description

A priest in the rock-hewn church of Church of Bet Medhane Alem displays one of the most precious religious objects in Lalibela, if not all of Ethiopia: a 7 kilogram (15.4 pound) gold cross in the Lalibela style.

The cross was almost lost due to theft. According to The New York Times:

"In 1997, one of Ethiopia's most sacred artifacts, a 12th-century gold-and-bronze cross -- said to have been made by King Lalibela, who gave this town its name and churches -- was stolen from Bet Medhane Alem church. After a Belgian collector was stopped from taking it into Belgium by customs officials there, the cross was returned to Ethiopia in 1999."

(From "Ethiopia's Rock of Ages, Balm of the Faithful," by Norimitsu Onishi, published August 2, 2001, in The New York Times.)

The priest's vestments are richer and more dazzling than any I had seen up to this point on our trip; the same is true for the fabric draped through the base of the cross.

He is wisely wearing sunglasses to protect his eyes from flash photography.
