Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Feuars' Muir - March Stone 11. For the main discussion of these stones, and for an index to the photographs, see 992179.

As noted in Professor Rankin's booklet on these boundary markers, those appointed to check that the twelve stones were properly set into place seem to have tired of their task before the end: stone 11, shown here, was simply left lying on its side, while the missing stone 12 was, it seems, never present on the moor at all.

The smoothly finished surface on the right-hand part of the stone is the half that would be visible, had the stone been fixed into the ground. This view also shows the more roughly finished lower half. For a closer look at the stone, see 1759306.

The smooth upper part is 45cm square in cross-section. The total height is about 97cm, and just under half of that height is the smooth upper part that would normally appear above ground; that part is therefore in the form of a cube. From such measurements, Prof Rankin estimated that these stones each weigh about 11cwt (approximately 560kg).

In the background, on the left, is a water pumping station associated with Greenside Reservoir. The track in front of it runs parallel to the Loch Humphrey Burn, and leads to Duntocher.

Previous: 992367.

[Next: none. Stone 12 was apparently never set into place. However, the annotated satellite view shows its approximate intended position (as determined from the hand-drawn map in Prof Rankin's booklet).]
