The church edifices, however, are of interest fnnn their arcliitectureand their historic associations. The cathedral, founded in loTO. hasbeen destroyed by earthquakes and rebuilt several times. The impos-ing structure now seen was built on the ruins of the old one whichwas destroyed by an earthquake in 1880. It is built of stone andbrick at a cost of over half a mi.llion dollars, and the most noteworthybuilding on the islands. It is in the heart of old Manila, and the greatreligious processions for which the town is famous all start here, andfinally come back here to break up.
