Description |
The Fakeer's Rock at Janguira, near Sultangunj From: Lt. Col. C. R. Forrest, from A Picturesque Tour Along the River Ganges and Jumna in India (London: R. Ackermann, 1824) The Fakeer's Rock at Junguira This is plate 10 from Charles Ramus Forrest's 'A Picturesque tour along the rivers Ganges and Jumna, in India'. Forrest was an East India Company official who made several excursions along the great rivers, producing drawings "attentively copied from nature, and in many instances coloured on the spot, ... while the magic effects of the scenes represented were still impressed on [his] mental vision." In December 1807, Forrest set out with companions on an excursion to visit various towns on the river banks. Some distance before reaching Monghyr, they saw in the Ganges a "singular mass of rock standing in the water ... It is distant about two hundred yards from the right bank, immediately opposite to the village of Sultangunge. It rises about seventy feet above the level of the water, towering abruptly from its bosom." |
