Description

About 1680 there was no harbour and therefore the ships were anchored in the bay. Because the fisherman had to guard their ships by stormy weather a wooden hut was built to shelter them. In 1882 the little shelter was replaced by a stone house. Above the entrance is ‘the ever watching eye’.

Plaquette (on the left): In memory of Dutch North Pole Sailor Willem Barentsz.

Born in 1540 on this island (Terschelling). Died nearby Nova Zembla in 1597.
