Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Cross Stone - geograph.org.uk - 1193412.jpg |
English: The Cross Stone. The gate visible behind the stone is the one shown here: 1193388.
The large flat stone in the foreground is marked on the 1:25000 map as "Cross Stone", and was the base of a stone cross until the late nineteenth century. Details at WoSAS: http://www.wosas.net/wosas_site.php?id=7059 In order to support the cross, the stone has a hole in the centre of its upper surface; that hole can still clearly be seen when inspecting the stone, but it is hard to show it in photographs (except for close-up shots) because it lies directly underneath the fence. Until a few months ago, it would not have been practical to photograph the stone from this angle, since it would have been densely shaded by forestry (now cleared – see the link at the start of this item) that extended right up to the line of the fence. For another view, see: 1259043. |
