Fig. 11. A mosaic of the Milky Way from Deneb in Northern Cygnus to Sirius in Cams Major made to demonstrate that astronomical photography is practicable at sea on a routine basis. This mosaic is composed of 16 exposures, each of 15 min duration, made from R. V. Chain in latitudes 12° to 14° north on the 65° west meridian during the nights of 4th and 5th May, 1962, using a Schneider Xenon lens of 50-mm focal length working at //2 on Tri-X film. The principal objects are from left to right: Deneb, Vega, Altair, Scutum Sobieski, Sagittarius, Scorpio (Antares), a Centauri, the southern coal sack, southern Cross, Argo Navis, Canis Major (Sirius). The Argo region is faint because it remained low on the southern horizon.
