English: The Co-op Museum, Toad Lane, Rochdale. Toad Lane, Rochdale, where the Co-operative Movement began in 1844. The Street is now a Historical conservation area with the Rochdale Pioneers Museum as its focal point. In 1981 the Toad Lane conservation area received a Civic Trust Award as the re-creation of a 19th/early 20th Century street by the Rochdale Metropolitan Borough, Greater Manchester Council and the Co-operative Union, the custodian of the Museum.
The Toad Lane Store has been a Museum since 1931 devoted to the story of the Rochdale Pioneers who began trading there in 1844 - a Co-operative Society with 28 members and £28.00 working capital. |
