Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Carnegie Library of Savannah 01.jpg |
English: In 1906, eleven African-Americans men formed the Colored Library Association of Savannah. In 1913, they were awarded a grant by the Carnegie Corporation of New York for funds to build a permanent home for the collection.
The unique Prairie style architecture is the only one of its design within the city. One of only two Carnegie library projects for African-Americans in Georgia, this was the home library to Pulitzer Prize winner, James Alan McPherson and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Awards include the Historic Preservation Award by the Historic Savannah Foundation, two awards from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and in 2005, was recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. |
