The idea of establishing a dining-room occurred to President Pattersonon a trip of inspection through thefactory, when he observed a womanheating coffee for her lunch in a canon one of the steam radiators. Begin-ning with two gas stoves, the idea hasgrown until it has taken perfect formin the commodious Welfare Hall, wherelunch is served not only to the sixhundred women employees, but alsoto the men of the factory. In May, 1905, an order was issuedby the company for the construction of Welfare Hall, which by the origi-inal plan was to have been 268 feet inlength, the work to be done entirelyby workmen then in the employ ofthe company, and to be completed infive weeks.
