Text Appearing Before Image:
before the Lord.—Lev., 10, 2. NOW Nadab and Abihu, the two elder sons ofAaron, had been chosen for the priesthood appar-ently only because they were his sons. They werein no way specially adapted for the service. On the con-trary they were negligent. Instead of studying, as Aarondid, to obey- exactly the directions God had given Mosesfor each ceremonial, they carried censers of coals into thesanctuary, and offered strange fire before the Lord, whichhe commanded them not. Instantly there flashed fortha flame from the ark, and the heedless young men felldead. There is one biblical verse which suggests that theymay have been drunk with liquor when they approachedthe ark; but their crime needed not this added darkness. Those who aspire to serve God in high places must holdthemselves to a more strict account than the poor andignorant. What might be mere folly in others becomesblackest sin in the leaders exalted post. Aaron wascautioned that he might not even mourn for his sonsdeath. 11-68

THE sudden death of Aarons sons doubtless servedas sufficient warning to the Israehtes to be exactand punctilious in following the religious cere-monials laid down for them. There are in the Bible manychapters of directions concerning these; and all are plannedwith forethought and justice. Thus, for instance, oneimportant principle was that the value of an offering shouldbe proportioned to the wealth of the individual whopresented it. This is illustrated in the present picture. One of thelaws was that a mother, after her child was born, shouldcome with an offering of purification, when she returnedto the tabernacle to give thanks to the Lord. The chiefoffering was to be lamb; but if the woman was poor, two turtle doves or two young pigeons would suflBce
