Also, the background isoften beyond control, and can be varied only by moving toanother spot. The light is also beyond control, so that theworker must modify his ideas and his attitude to meet the il-lumination, instead of changing the light to suit his ideas.And the clothing suitable for outdoors is not always that ap-propriate to either home or studio, so that a certain expres-sion of the sitter may be impossible. . But as so often happens in photography, disadvantages bearsomewhat of the flavor of advantages; the good and the badare so inextricably mingled that we cannot say definitely,such-and-such a thing is undesirable. The very conditionswhich require an alert and open mind develop thereby a sensi-tiveness, an appreciation, which would otherwise be lacking,and result in a freshness and spontaneity that is rarely seen in 148

That is, the changing conditionshelp in two ways: directly in the setting; and indirectly, in thephotographers mental attitude. The quality of the light alsomay help, for an outdoor light, especially if direct sunlight,gives a snap and Hfe which cannot be secured indoors exceptat the expense of naturalness; the use of spotlights andsecondary lighting will give it, to be sure, but it then becomesdifficult to preserve unity and harmony, and the effect is notthat of a figure bathed in sunlight. So, too, with the cloth-ing. Furs are more convincing when seen against a back-ground of snow and sky than when worn indoors; a ridinghabit is more at home outdoors than in the studio; and a lightsummer garment harmonizes better with a background oftrees than with the painted background of the studio.
