r, fine as the results produced by this medium are, lacksthe opportunity for control, and expression of individuality, which a process to be suited to the needs of the pictorialistshould have. Platinum renders gradations in the highlightsbetter than any other process, but is not so susceptible to con-trol as Gum and does not give so rich a black as can beobtained with some other processes. Hand coated platinumwith several printings is much better. Gum is not a process to be used in small sizes of pictures, but rather for the production of exhibition pictures, and thosein which you desire to express something more than the limita-tions of the lens and plate have allowed you to get on yournegative. It is a process for the impressionist, not the realist, and is for the man who has an idea to put in permanent form,an interpretation of some beautiful mood of nature, ratherthan fo
