ed from a much larger number) of a single groupof willows located upon the margin of a small pond. *InApril (Figure i) presents the subject before the foliageappeared, the diffused lighting quite characteristic of a mildspring afternoon lending tonal softness to the rendering.By the Rush Fringed Bank (Figure 2) was made in Junefrom a standpoint considerably to the left, and lower, thanthe first, while The Willow Screen (Figure 3) shows the 22s trees as they appear from a point on the shore directly backof them, with a suggestion of water appearing beyond. InFigures 2 and 3 an effort was made to utiHze in a decorativemanner the pattern formed by the spots of foHage and spacingof the tree-trunks. The fourth study, A Winter Afternoon(Figure 4), shows the material from almost the same angleas the springtime study, but nearer the trees, and somewhatlower, the difference in effect between them being due to thepresence of snow and greater space occupied by the trees inthe winter composition.
