stable enlarging camera, one should see that theoutside inclined white reflector is quite clean and receives anunobstructed light. Sometimes part of the reflector isshadowed by its nearness to the building, or by a projectionoverhead. A point often overlooked is that the reflectorshould be large enough to fill the whole view-angle of thelens when the camera is at the shortest extension likely tobe wanted. Thus, in Figure i, the dotted lines give the angleincluded by the lens A, at a given short distance from thenegative B. They demonstrate how, at that extension, thereflector C is too small and will not light the whole negativeevenly, although it will do so when the camera is racked outfurther, for a smaller-size enlargement. This will be especiallyapparent with a thin negative, or when making an enlargednegative from a transparency. For the same reason it isimportant to see that the opening in the window shutter D issufficiently large, according to its distance from the negative. 168

The negativeshould not be too close to the diffusing medium, or the grainmay be focused. With an enlarging lantern having a compound plano-convex condenser it is a much more complicated matter toget even lighting. The brightest part of the arc, incandescentfilament, mantle, or lamp flame, as the case may be, has tobe brought on to the common axis of the condenser and
