imperatively necessary that the mapsremain in the offices of the various companies. If the mapshad been allowed to go out the proper installation of thenecessary apparatus could have been made permanent, as tothe setting of camera in relation to the easel for this reduction,and the whole operation simplified. Failure to get the original maps involved going to theEngineering Departments, rig up an easel of about lo by 12feet for the tacking up of the maps to be photographed.These maps were in some cases of very great dimensionsnecessitating the use of many plates to complete the propertylines. A view camera 11 x 14 was employed, fitted with ananastigmat lens of good make, long extension bellows,equipped with rising and falling front and swing back. Theground-glass was centered both vertically and horizontally,and on these center lines divisions of one inch were marked(Figure i). The easel was also divided in the same mannervertically and horizontally, the divisions being ten inches 32

In order to get clear cut negatives a process plate was used,and in some cases where the maps were in colors the necessaryplate and color screen were employed. Practically all the maps were made on tracing cloth whichmade the use of the process plate imperatively necessary.However, a blue print was sometimes photographed, in this •:H—I—I—h —*■ Figure i.Ground Glass Divisions. case a trichromatic plate was used with an orange red screen,giving excellent results. In all cases the lens was stopped down to a F/64 opening,giving an exposure of about two minutes as a maximum, thetime of course being greatly dependent upon the light con-ditions.
