a dozen plates on mixedsubjects you are on the high road to success. These double coated plates will stand a great deal of over-exposure, at least four times the minimum exposure neededto produce a perfect negative, simply growing in general den-sity as the exposure increases and not flattening out. Any dry plate company will, on request, tell you Exactly howmany grains of sulphite, carbonate and pyro to dissolve inany given amount of water for average results on any indi-vidual brand of plate they make, and will tell you the propertime and temperature. You can try it, and by varying theamount of carbonate and sulphite get the exact color and con-trast you want. The manuals issued by the plate makers usu-ally call for stock solutions which are not to be re(iommended.Tray development by red light is bound to product some fog, usually just enough to take the sparkle out of thfe negatives. The film of a double coated plate is so thick you cannot seethrough it to judge the image anyway. 190

u o en ou m u 191 Keep your chemicals in tightly corked bottles. The East-man anhydrous sulphite and carbonate are the ones mentionedin the above tank formula. The fluffy kind of pyro (re-sub-limed) is handier to weigh in small quantities than the moredense crystal kind. I have never found that the minute amountof potassium bromide recommended for use in tank develop-ers had any use, so have omitted it. It is also well to go over your wet negatives with a largewad of damp (not soaking wet) absorbent cotton to remove alltear drops, and as much of the surface water as possible be-fore putting the negatives in the sun to dry. This insuresquick even drying. It is also a most excellent idea to learn to dust, load yourdry plates into holders, load the plates into the tank, rinse thedeveloped plates in water, and place them in the fixing bathin absolute darkness. Any red light in the dark-room meanspossible fog. If you will do this you are certain any fog onyour negatives is caused by someth
