Text Appearing Before Image:
m it untilrecently. Henry W. Poore in his Pictorial Composition andthe Critical Judgment of Pictures says that a good landscapeshould not have two entrances to a picture. • This picture is asplendid illustration to show how this advice holds good, asthe two roads make two distinct entrances to the old mill. The one on the left could be dispensed with and improve thecomposition of the rest of the picture. Figure 2 shows theroad worked out, and the sky improved. I feel sure that ifattention were not called to it or comparison prints shown thehand work would never be noticed. A CHARACTER STUDY. WILLIAM H. ZERBE. 261 with the film side of the positive down and the ground-glassmatt surface up. The frame is placed where the light willshine through from the back. Spread some graphite powderon a piece of card-board. Take an artists leather stump andrub a little of the graphite on the end of it. Now rub it overthe part which represents the road, which being light or nearlyclear glass in the positive, it must be darkened to correspondwith the surrounding part. Care must be taken to match thetexture or design of the foliage. This may be done by stippling •vi^--
