It is not necessary that one be a professional, nor must hebe equipped with the very latest and most perfect appliancespossible to produce. Any ordinary dry plate will produce agood night view—the difference in the speed of the plateregulating the difference in the length of exposure. It istrue some lenses are better adapted for the taking of photo-graphs at night where bright arc lights shine directly into thecamera, and in such cases non-halation plates will also producethe better results. THE REFUGE. LOUIS J. STEELE. camera any lens will answer the purpose admirably. With alittle manipulation one can usually obscure arc lights exceptwhere there are too many. Incandescent lights do not usuallycause blurs by halation unless over-exposed. A little halationaround the brighter lights, if it is not too sharply defined, isnot altogether objectionable, as a little haze gives a truerappearance of what is really seen with the eye. It is utterly impossible to give a definite time of exposurefor a night photograph any more so than for a daylight picture.Night photographs are shown that were taken where con-ditions were the very best; where many brilliant lights threwtheir bright rays upon the scene to be taken and when thenight was a wet and rainy one so that the wet pavementscaught and reflected every particle of light. It is said suchphotographs had exposures of close to a second. Those photo-graphs were an achievement and were produced with themost rapid plates and lenses. Such
