Text Appearing Before Image:
ults without a filter, particularly if the sky is shadedduring exposure. Double-coated plates are particularly de-sirable. So much for apparatus. The next great essential is the possession of the pictorialsense. The worker who has this gift or can develop it bystudy and training will never lack subjects. Choose simple, large masses, foreground studies, single motives, turn the long-focus lens on them and compose the elements of the pictureon the ground-glass until they balance correctly. Distractingdetails which refuse to be suppressed may be worked out ofthe negatives afterwards. The exposure in pictorial workneed not always be normal; in fact, as A. J. Anderson saysin The Artistic Side of Photography—quite the best bookwhich has yet appeared—one should expose for the toneswhich are most desired. It all depends on what the land-scape says to you and how you expect to render the im-pression in your print. Without this personal touch yourresult will be a record and not a picture. 98
Text Appearing After Image:
. w ^ o S o Q O JO 2^ < Q :^o w o wo Q ww H -tH Ah The negative should be treated with a view to subsequentenlargement, that is, it should be kept thin and harmonious. Then direct bromide enlargement may be made for bromoil ifdesired, or one can make either a contact positive or an en-larged postitive in the camera, and on this do any workingup or alterations which may seem necessary. I believe itis always a help to have the positive on glass to study, becausefrom it one can tell just what modifications will help expressthe sentiment of the picture. If all the work is done on thepositive, the final enlarged negative will yield straight printsin any desired medium. Platinotype is unquestionably one of the finest printingprocesses yet discovered. There is a certain charm in thetexture and quality of a good platinum print which is un-approached by any other positive on paper, and if the negativeis not too hard, platinum reproduces the delicate variations oftonal quality
