Panoramic pictures taken with separate exposures are oftenbetter mounted only in close proximity, leaving a narrow spacebetween each section. An eminent authority says that the use of large aperturesand throwing distance out of focus gives better perspectiveand truer tonality and atmosphere, as small stops give equalbrightness to allplanes; that lenses with spherical aberrationshould not be used for landscapes, as they affect the tonalityby lowering the tone throughout, while throwing the distanceout of focus with a corrected lens lowers the tone principallyin the distance. He maintains that the best results are ob-tained by using a lens corrected for all aberrations, but thatno part of the image should be absolutely sharp; that the backcombination of a rapid rectilinear used at open aperture givesthe truest tonality in landscape. 270
