Color plates are so wonderful, so startling, so beautiful and,on the whole, so worth while, considering that no specialequipment except a ray filter is required, that I cannot con-ceive of any excuse for amateurs generally not making them. In the hope that I may induce others to try their hand Ishall attempt to set forth how I have worked and made satis-factory color plates (with no other equipment than a littleknowledge, a camera box, a lens, a screen, a clock, someplates and chemicals, and a room that was made dark atnight). My dark room is my bedroom, in which I am fortunateenough to have a stationary washstand with running water,but a bath room is excellent if you have a couple of boards tolay across the top of the tub for a table. My white light isa cap-mantle Welsbach of about lOO candle-power, and mydark-room lantern is a cigar box containing a 3-candle-power electric lamp, connected through a switch on the top 228

In my dark room I believe in havingplenty of table surface, and so I employ two sewing tables,one for developing and the other for extra trays, chemicals,graduates, etc. This is only so solutions may be mixed up inadvance in trays, in order that plates may be put through withthe least delay, as it is not good to keep plates in or out ofsolutions longer than absolutely necessary. After the finalwashing the plate should be dried as quickly as possible.
