Aside from the question of color, hemust apply the same rules as does the painter, with the addeddifficulty of making his tones suggest color. The whole fieldof art is opened to him and he has need for all the knowledgeof the subject which he can acquire. Every added refinementof the sensibilities will show in his results. The pictorial photographer, to do his best work, must studythe best pictures produced by every process and in every age,whenever he has access to them. He must read the best booksobtainable on painting, composition, landscape engineering orgardening, art subjects of every kind, as well as those onphotography per se. From each of these he will cull muchthat will better his product. The photographic magazines andexhibitions will have a new interest for him, for he will beginto exercise his artistic judgment—to become a critic. Foundation principleswill be found to underlie pictorial art, sculpture, music, litera-ture and the drama. A careful study of pictorial art will leadto the whole field. The question of equipment is of much less importance tothe pictorialist than to the record-of-fact man.
