m my own observation I am convincedthat a very small proportion of the users of orthochromaticplates could defend on technical grounds their employment ofthem. The prevalent belief, and the main objection, with re-gard to the orthochromatic plate is that it has to be developedin total darkness. For the last twenty years I have exclusively used ortho-chromatic plates in my landscape work, and I accepted themonly after a clear recognition that they would enormously helpin making my work easier and better, this work being topo-graphical landscape photography for publishing purposes. My conversion to orthochromatic plates was brought aboutone wet summer spent among the mountains of North Wales.Fine days were infrequent, and even when they chanced thedistances in the landscapes were usually obscured with haze.One or two comparative tests with the ordinary plate againstthe orthochromatic plus a filter quickly decided me that manydays could be utilized for work if the orthochromatic plate 28

That the comparison is a perfectly reliable onemay be gathered from the fact that the two negatives weremade at the same time, and under exactly similar conditions.Moreover, I was not keenly desirous of changing to ortho-chromatic plates at the time, as the brand of ordinary plates Iwas using was remarkably fine, and the orthochromatic wereof home preparation.
