Description
English: An obelisk erected in place of the fallen Agia Tree which lived for more than 300 years and grew to a height of 6 feet and about 30 feet wide. It was under this tree that Christianity was first preached in Nigeria by Reverend Thomas Birch Freeman of the Methodist Faith and Reverend Henry Townsend of the Anglican Missionary Society. The first Christmas service in Nigeria was held under the shade of this tree on 25th December, 1842. The tree blown down in a storm at about 11:45 pm on Saturday 20th of June, 1949. The site has been preserved and turned to a pilgrimage spot visited by Christians from all over the world.
