ll those diseases and diseased con-ditions resulting from the existence of the so-called rheumaticor uric acid diathesis, the action of salicylic acid from natural oilof wintergreen approaches so nearly to that of a specific as to heexcelled cnly by that of cinchona on malarial toxemia. But the administration of the synthetic salicylic acid in fulldoses is almost always productive of unpleasant and often danger-ous effects, such as irritation of the stomach, ringing of the earsand even delirium, thus necessitating a diminution of the dose ora temporary suspension of treatment. This is also the case withmany extemporaneous prescriptions having salicylic acid as a baseand combined with other indicated agents. On that account, during the past twelve years I have prescribedTongaline many times because it is a compound of well recognizedagents and all the salicylic acid it contains is made from the nat-ural oil of wintergreen.
