Portrait painting of Terry Fox (1958-1981), a Canadian athlete and cancer research activist. After losing his leg to cancer at only 18 years of age, Terry tried to run across Canada, in pursuit of his dream to find a cure for cancer.

English: Portrait painting of Terry Fox (1958-1981)

In 1980, Terry’s journey to raise money for cancer research began and he called it the Marathon of Hope. His perseverance deeply affected millions of people. He was forced to end his run after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres. Terry Fox held a tearful press conference during which he announced that his cancer had returned and spread to his lungs. Although he passed away in 1981 when he was 22 years of age, his legend lives as a Canadian hero.
