Description |
English: By the time the ice broke at the end of May 1898, an estimated 10,000 people were camped on the shore of Lake Bennett, another 10,000 were camped at nearby Lake Lindeman, and 20,000 were enroute from Dyea and Skagway. At the lakeshore, they built boats and scows to take them down the Yukon River.
This 1898 photo of the tent city at Lake Bennett (also called Bennett Lake) was taken after the ice had melted. Rows of boats line the shore in preparation for the trip downriver.
