Two similar views of Earth, taken a decade apart by an astronaut and a comet chaser.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Two similar views of Earth, taken a decade apart by an astronaut and a comet chaser.

The first photo was taken by Rosetta's navigation camera on 4 March 2005, and shows the Moon rising above the limb of the Earth over the Pacific at 22:06 UTC, just three minutes before the comet-chasing spacecraft reached closest approach of 1954 km during its first Earth fly-by. Rosetta went on to conduct three more gravity assist flybys (one Mars, two Earth), two asteroid flybys, deep-space hibernation, wake-up and then a rendezvous with comet 67P/C-G in 2014. www.esa.int/rosetta

The second was taken by ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti on board the International Space Station from about 410 km altitude and posted via Twitter on 29 March 2015. It shows Earth just before 01:34 UTC, in about the same orientation as Rosetta's photo ten years ago, with a great view of the limb and thin atmosphere. Samantha is conducting a six-month science mission to the ISS. www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/Futura/Futur...
