Description

On 20 May 1910 the funeral of King Edward VII was held. Government offices across New Zealand were closed in respect for the deceased monarch and government employees were ordered to wear mourning from the announcement of the death of the king, until after the funeral. Memorial services were held at churches and other venues across the country.

Albert Edward (“Bertie”) was the eldest son of Queen Victoria, born 9 November 1841, he succeeded to the throne on 22 January 1901 and died 6 May 1910. A regular smoker he increasingly suffered from bronchitis, and on 6 May had several heart attacks, he died just before midnight. In England the funeral provided one of the largest gatherings of European royalty ever seen. The funeral procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster for a small ceremony, then on to Paddington station, where a train took the funeral party to Windsor for the full funeral service at St George’s Chapel.
