tre gudor housing, viken, sweden (2000) architects: tegnestuen vandkunsten this rather fine project by flemming ibsen and jens thomas arnfred came long after vandkunsten had given up their political agenda but still displays lessons from the early works on the question of scale and not least on the social space in housing, here best illustrated by the old office truism that once the architects are done, it is easier to put in an extra curtain than an extra window. we must challenge people's privacy, once it has been established, there is no going back. the corner windows do allow neighbours to look into your home, but only a limited area which people typically use to show who they are. a challenge for the somewhat buttoned-up swedes, no doubt. they also, and this is very much part of their attraction, bring the werkbund-like houses into the 21st century when lit from the inside at night. |
